- Britain’s Canada
Act divides the new country into Upper Canada, with its
capital at Newark (later Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario),
& Lower Canada, with Quebec City as its capital

Under the Constitutional Act, 1791
certain owners and tenants were granted qualified voter status,
without distinction as to sex. Some women of Lower Canada (Quebec)
who met the prerequisites interpreted this constitutional
"oversight" as an authorization to vote. It would seem that they
were the only women in the British Empire to avail themselves of
this right New Brunswick passes a law excluding women from
the right to vote. 1849, under the leadership of La
Fontaine-Baldwin, this "historical irregularity" was
rectified when women were formally prohibited from
voting
1791 - New Brunswick passes a second
act to regulate Marriage and Divorce etc. allowing
divorce on grounds of frigidity, impotence, adultery &
blood relationship. a court composed of the province's
governor and five members of council was set up to hear
all divorce and alimony cases
