The summer Olympic Games were held in Rio. For Team Canada 16 of the 22 medals won were won in women's events. Rosie MacLennan, a trampolinist, becomes the first Canadian athlete to successfully defent a gold medal at the summer Olympic Games and the firs Canadian woman to win two gold medals in an individual even at the Olympic Summer Games

August 19, 2016 - Bardish Chagger (1980-   ) is sworn in as Leader of the Government, the 1st woman to hold this position

October 14, 2016 - Janet Morrison Miller-Murray (1891-1946) who had applied to be examined for the Barr in 1910 was proclaimed an honourary lawyer by the Newfoundland and Labrador Law Society

November 2016 - Ontario is the 1st province to pass the Al Families are Equal Act, which allows up to four people to be legal parents of a child they plan, conceive & raise together. The legislation protects the relationship between the children and all their parents, including non-biological parents

December 8, 2016 - Viola Desmond
is chosen as the 1st Canadian woman to appear on the face of a circulating Bank of Canada note. The ban note will be issued in 2018

2019 March 2019 - The Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, Washington D C, U.S.A. displays 35 red dresses outside of its building. The Red Dress campaign is a North American campaign which started in Canada in 2010 to raise Awareness for Missing and Murdered women, girls, and two spirited people. Red is traditional thought to be the only colour spirits can see thus a red dress is a way of calling the spirits of Missing and Murdered Indigenous women, girls, and two spirited back to their loved ones.

2022 - Ellie Black, Laurie Denommée, Denelle Pedrick, Emma Spence, and Sydney Turner win the bronze medal in the women's team event at the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships.  It is the first time Canada has ever won a team medal at the artistic gymnasices worlkds and it qualifies a full Canadian women's team for the Olympic Summer Games in 2024, Paris, France

July 15, 2022 - Camryn Rogers wins a silver medal in women's hammer throw at the world Athletics Championships. She is the first Canadian woman to win a world medal in a field event

July 2022 - Sarah Mitton, the first Canadian woman to surpass the 20-m mark in shot put  (20.23) at the World Athletics Championships. She was pushed off the podium by a tiebreaker and was Canada's best ever result in women's shot put at the worlds

December 2022 - Caitlin Nash and Natalie Corless win a bronze medal at World Cup Luge, Park City, Utah, U.S.A. This is Canada's first ever world Cup medal in a women's double luge event

2022 - Women make up 15% of the Canadian military, with over 7,900 female personnel serving in the regular force and more than 4,800 women serving in the primary reserve. Out of that number, 225 women are part of the regular combat force and 925 are enlisted in the primary reserve combat force
